The Queer Mail Art Project began as a reaction to the serious backsliding of LGBTQIA+ rights around the world--rising transphobia and homophobia, threatening to undo the major progress won by the sacrifice of Queer people everywhere.
Here's how it works:
1. People around the world send us mail. This includes writing, photos, drawings, poetry, paintings; anything that can fit in an envelope.
2. Once we receive the mail, we add it to our archive, unopened.
3. 100 years from now, in 2125, we will begin to open the mail. The contents will be scanned and broadcast around the world.
Think of QMAP as a space to be totally vulnerable and honest. So much Queer history has been lost! We want to provide an honest picture of being LGBT+ today so that future generations will feel seen and represented in history. Inspired by the Future Library in Oslo created by Katie Paterson, QMAP is a slow, intentional act of queer preservation for future generations.
